There is many places you can feel traditional Japan around Kyoto but Sagawa Art Museum is the crossing point of tradition and modern architect.
There is a tea pavilion which is designed by Raku Kichizaemon 15th. Raku Kichizaemon is the artisan of tea bowl which are used for tea ceremony from 16th century. The first generation of Raku Kichizaemon made tea bowl for Senno Rikyu, most famous tea master, and Shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi named him "Raku".
Raku Kichizaemon 15th is very innovative artisan, he is not only succeeded tradition but make new creation. The tea pavilion in Sagawa Museum is one of his new creation. In the basement floor, the sun throw the water comes in, and there is the beauty of contrast of concrete wall and decayed wood. The tea pavilion is on the artificial pond. Normally tea pavilion is made with wood and paper but this is made by concrete and glass. From this new « solid » pavilion, we still feel Japanese sensitivity. He is the artisan who do update tradition to now.
